Roles & Responsibilities
- Assist cardiovascular and thoracic surgeons in the CVOR as the primary RN First Assistant during procedures
- Provide direct surgical assistance: control bleeding, provide wound exposure, suture, and handle tissue with precision
- Perform vessel harvests (open and endoscopic leg vein harvest) and assist in CABG, MVR, AVR, TAVR and endoluminal AAA procedures
- Support all thoracic, carotid endarterectomies (CEAs) and vascular cases with expert intraoperative technique
- Collaborate with the perioperative team to maintain a safe, sterile environment and optimize patient outcomes
- Participate in pre-op and post-op planning, documentation, and handoffs to ensure continuity of care
Qualifications
- Active RN license in Missouri or eligibility to obtain Missouri licensure
- Minimum 2-3 years of CVOR or surgical first assistant experience (strongly preferred)
- Experience with CABG, MVR, AVR, TAVR, endoscopic and open vein harvests, endoluminal AAA, thoracic and vascular procedures
- Certification or experience as an RN First Assistant (RNFA) preferred; CNOR or equivalent perioperative certification a plus
- Current BLS and ACLS certification (or willingness to obtain)
- Excellent sterile technique, tissue handling, suturing skills, and intraoperative decision-making
- Ability to work a 4x10 day schedule and participate in call rotation (approx. 10 days/month)
Education
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) — BSN preferred
- Additional perioperative or RNFA training/certification highly desirable
Knowledge & Skills
- In-depth knowledge of cardiovascular and vascular surgical anatomy and procedures
- Proficient in wound care, tissue handling and intraoperative hemostasis
- Familiarity with endovascular and open surgical techniques
- Strong intraoperative communication and team coordination skills
- Competent with surgical instrumentation, OR workflows and sterile field management
- Ability to anticipate surgeon needs and adapt quickly in high-stakes situations
