Roles & Responsibilities
- Perform utilization review and concurrent reviews using InterQual and Milliman guidelines to determine medical necessity
- Document thorough clinical findings in Epic and maintain accurate data abstraction
- Coordinate care across disciplines including Pharmacy, Respiratory, PT, Social Services and Transportation
- Communicate clearly with providers using SBAR to support authorization and appeals workflows
- Manage prior authorizations, pre-cert reviews, retrospective reviews and appeals/denials processes
- Drive quality improvement by identifying opportunities in medical necessity determination and documentation
- Support discharge planning and care coordination to help patients transition safely and efficiently
Qualifications
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license (California) required
- Minimum 3 years of RN experience (acute care/utilization review/related settings)
- EPIC experience REQUIRED; demonstrated proficiency documenting in Epic
- BLS certification REQUIRED; CMC preferred
- Experience with InterQual and/or Milliman guidelines
- Travel experience required — no first-time travelers
- COVID-19 vaccine + booster required (medical/religious exemptions only); flu vaccine required (medical exemptions only)
Education
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
- Active RN license in California
Knowledge & Skills
- Utilization Review and Case Management principles
- Determining medical necessity per evidence-based guidelines
- Prior authorization, pre-certification, concurrent and retrospective review processes
- Familiarity with CPT, ICD-10 coding, DRG, HEDIS measures and CMS/NCQA regulations
- Strong communication, critical thinking, problem-solving and time management
- Care coordination and discharge planning across varied settings
- Proficiency with clinical documentation in Epic and use of InterQual criteria
