Roles & Responsibilities
- Review clinical records and determine medical necessity using InterQual and Milliman criteria
- Conduct concurrent and retrospective reviews to support appropriate utilization and care transitions
- Communicate clearly with providers using SBAR to advocate for patient care and necessary authorizations
- Coordinate with interdisciplinary services (Pharmacy, PT, Respiratory, Social Services, etc.) to support discharge planning
- Document review findings and decisions accurately in EPIC and InterQual documentation systems
- Support appeals, denials, and prior authorization workflows with evidence-based rationale
- Participate in audits, quality improvement activities, and data abstraction to improve outcomes
Qualifications
- Active RN license in the state of California required
- Minimum 3 years of relevant nursing experience (acute hospital/utilization review preferred)
- EPIC experience REQUIRED — you should be fluent in clinical charting and documentation
- BLS certification REQUIRED; Certified Case Manager (CMC) is preferred
- Experience with InterQual and Milliman guidelines for medical necessity determinations
- Prior experience with concurrent review, prior authorizations, appeals/denials, and discharge planning
- COVID-19 vaccine and booster required per facility policy (medical/religious exemptions only)
Education
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required; BSN preferred
- Active RN license in California
Knowledge & Skills
- InterQual and Milliman clinical criteria
- EPIC charting and documentation workflows
- CPT and ICD-10 coding fundamentals
- CMS, NCQA, HEDIS, DRG, HIPAA and OSHA regulatory knowledge
- Concurrent review, continued stay reviews, pre-cert and retrospective review processes
- Strong communication (SBAR), critical thinking and time management skills
- Ability to coordinate with multiple departments and providers effectively
