Roles & Responsibilities

• Conduct utilization reviews using EPIC and InterQual to determine medical necessity and guide care decisions
• Perform concurrent and retrospective reviews, prior authorization and pre-certification activities
• Communicate effectively with providers and interdisciplinary teams using SBAR for clear, concise handoffs
• Support care coordination and discharge planning to ensure smooth transitions and appropriate utilization
• Abstract clinical data, apply CPT/ICD-10/DRG knowledge, and document findings accurately in EPIC
• Manage appeals, denials and audits with attention to regulatory standards and quality improvement
• Provide telephonic case management and collaborate with ancillary services like pharmacy, PT, RT and social services

Qualifications

• Active RN license (state of practice) required
• Minimum 3 years of relevant nursing experience (acute care, case management, utilization review or similar)
• EPIC experience REQUIRED and previous utilization review or case management experience preferred
• BLS required; CMC preferred
• Travel experience required; no first-time travelers
• COVID-19 vaccine and booster required (medical/religious exemptions only); annual flu vaccine required (medical exemptions only)

Education

• Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
• Active RN licensure required

Knowledge & Skills

• Strong communication skills and SBAR handoff familiarity
• Proficiency with InterQual and Milliman guidelines for medical necessity determinations
• Knowledge of CPT, ICD-10, DRG, HEDIS, NCQA and CMS regulations
• Experience with prior authorizations, concurrent review, appeals/denials and retrospective review
• Critical thinking, data abstraction, time management and care coordination skills
• Familiarity with The Joint Commission standards, HIPAA and OSHA
