Roles & Responsibilities

• Perform thorough utilization reviews using EPIC and InterQual to determine medical necessity and appropriate level of care
• Conduct concurrent and retrospective reviews, pre-certifications and prior authorizations to support timely patient care
• Document findings accurately in EPIC and maintain compliance with CMS, NCQA, HIPAA and facility standards
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams — pharmacy, PT, respiratory, social services and more — to coordinate patient care
• Support appeals and denials processes, audits, and quality improvement initiatives with clear, evidence-based rationale
• Abstract clinical data, apply CPT/ICD-10/DRG knowledge, and use Milliman and InterQual guidelines to inform decisions
• Communicate effectively with providers and stakeholders using SBAR and strong critical thinking to resolve complex cases

Qualifications

• Active RN license in the state of California (required)
• Minimum 3 years of relevant nursing experience (required)
• EPIC experience (required)
• BLS certification (required); CMC preferred
• Prior charge or leadership experience preferred
• Travel experience required — not a first-time traveler assignment
• COVID-19 vaccine and booster required (medical/religious exemptions only); flu vaccine required per facility policy
• Comfortable with telephonic reviews and diverse care settings (acute, LTAC, hospice, home health, pediatrics, etc.)

Education

• Active RN license required; BSN preferred

Knowledge & Skills

• Proven utilization review skills: concurrent review, continued stay reviews, pre-cert and prior authorization
• Familiarity with InterQual and Milliman guidelines and ability to apply evidence-based criteria
• Strong clinical documentation and data abstraction skills (EPIC charting experience)
• Knowledge of CPT, ICD-10, DRG, HEDIS, CMS requirements and regulatory quality measures
• Excellent communication (SBAR), critical thinking, time management and problem-solving abilities
• Experience with appeals/denials, audits, benefits eligibility and worker's compensation case management
