Roles & Responsibilities
- Gross surgical specimens accurately and document findings with care
- Embed tissue and perform precision microtomy to produce high-quality sections
- Run routine and special stains, including automated IHC and manual special stains
- Prepare and process frozen sections for intraoperative consultation
- Operate and maintain automated tissue processors and microtomes, troubleshoot as needed
- Perform cytology prep including ThinPrep, cell blocks and cytospin when required
- Maintain quality control, follow lab protocols, and ensure accurate charting (Epic preferred)
- Collaborate with pathologists and lab staff to support timely patient diagnoses
- Adhere to safety, infection control, and documentation standards
Qualifications
- ASCP-HT certification required
- Minimum 2 years of hospital histology experience (no first-time travelers)
- Strong experience with automated IHC, special stains, frozen sections and routine surgical pathology
- Experience in a teaching hospital setting preferred
- Familiarity with Epic charting system is a plus
- Must be vaccinated and boosted as required for travel submittal
- Ability to complete a 40-hour orientation and work collaboratively in a clinical lab
Education
- Associate's Degree in Science (preferred)
Knowledge & Skills
- Histology fundamentals: grossing, embedding, microtomy, staining
- Automated and manual immunohistochemistry (IHC)
- Special stains (PAS, Giemsa, carbohydrate, connective tissue stains, etc.)
- Frozen section preparation and cryostat operation
- Tissue processing, decalcification and microwave processing
- Precision microtomy for fatty, hard and frozen tissues
- ThinPrep and cytology specimen preparation
- Operation of automated tissue processors and automated microtomes
- Quality control, artifact identification and proper mounting/coverslipping
