Shift Type: PRN variable shifts (evenings, nights, days and occasional extended coverage). Primary shift types include 7:00 PM - 7:00 AM (overnight), 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM (day), 4:00 PM - 7:00 AM (extended/overnight), and occasional 3:00 PM - 7:00 PM; coverage includes weekends and holidays as scheduled. Rotating/variable PRN schedule.

Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide high-quality emergency care as the sole provider covering the ED and Med/Surg at MercyOne Elkader Medical Center
• Perform emergency procedures and manage inpatient and skilled-care patients as needed
• Document patient care accurately and efficiently using EPIC
• Collaborate with nursing, paramedic, and ancillary staff to coordinate patient care and transfers
• Triage and manage a typically low-volume rural ED while maintaining patient safety and throughput
• Adhere to facility policies, credentialing requirements and temporary privilege processes

Qualifications

• Certified Physician Assistant (PA-C) or equivalent
• Active Iowa PA license or eligibility for temporary privileges in Iowa
• Experience in emergency medicine or acute care preferred
• BLS required; ACLS and other emergency certifications preferred
• Ability to function independently as sole provider and work collaboratively with nursing and physician teams
• Willingness to travel to cover scheduled PRN blocks (travel reimbursements available)

Education

• Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program (PA-C preferred)

Knowledge & Skills

• Proficiency with EPIC electronic medical record
• Strong emergency assessment and procedural skills
• Comfort managing inpatient Med/Surg and skilled nursing patients
• Excellent communication, documentation, and clinical decision-making skills
• Ability to prioritize and manage multiple patients in a rural ED setting
